PRESENT PROGRESSIVE (with future meaning) INFORMATION & EXAMPLES:

Future with present progressive.

English is able to use the present progressive to talk about the future by employing temporal adverbs (in two weeks, tonight, tomorrow, etc). For example:

Tom is leaving in two weeks.
I am cooking dinner tonight.
We are staying home tomorrow.

The temporal adverbs place the actions in the future. Without them, we assume these actions are occurring at this moment.

now   future
Tom is leaving (right now). Tom is leaving in two weeks
I am cooking dinner (I’m at the stove). I am cooking dinner tonight (at the moment it is noon).
We are staying home (today). We are staying home tomorrow.

Note that it is possible to talk about the future using the present progressive without a temporal adverb once the context has been established.

context established (next week, tomorrow)   response
Where are you staying next week? We are staying in a hotel.
How is Tom getting to work tomorrow? He is taking the train.

Most negative statements used to indicate the future with the present progressive are formed with the negative adverb not which is placed between the auxiliary verb BE and the present participle.

sub-
ject
aux.
verb
neg.
adv.
pres.
part.

I am not paying for the damage.
He is not leaving until you apologize.
They are not moving before next year.

The present progressive is sometimes used to indicate that an action has occurred for the last time: it will not occur again in the future. This formula requires the negative adverb never and the adverb again.

sub-
ject
aux.
verb
neg.
adv.
main
verb

I am never talking to her again.
She is never living near an airport again.
We are never eating here again.

Unless a context has been established, questions formed using the present progressive usually require a temporal adverb.

Yes / No questions
Are you leaving tomorrow?
Is she hiking next weekend?
Am I going to the party with them?

Wh– questions
What time is the train arriving?
Who is coming to the party?
Why are they taking the bus?

[VIDEO_5]: FUTURE WITH PRESENT PROGRESSIVE (view).

El 'Present Continuous with Future Meaning' (o Presente Continuo con sentido de futuro) se utiliza para hablar de cosas que están planeadas en un futuro próximo.

En español no existe una equivalencia, por lo que debemos entender su uso.

¿PARA QUÉ SIRVE?

·         Se utiliza principalmente para hablar de planes de futuro que ya están completamente organizados y que además sabemos cuando y donde tendrá lugar (I.e. I'm playing tennis this afternoon).

I'm playing tennis this afternoon

Él no juega al tenis esta tarde.

He isn't playing tennis this afternoon

¿Juegan ellos al tennis esta tarde?

Are they playing tennis this afternoon?

Si nos fijamos bien en la frase en español vemos como a pesar de utilizar una forma de presente el sentido es de futuro. Algo parecido sucede en inglés, con la diferencia que en lugar del presente simple se utiliza el presente continuo.

Lo importante no es su traducción, sino entender que podemos utilizar este tiempo para hablar de futuro.

[VIDEO_4]: WILL + VERB. [VIEW].

I think the weather will be great this summer).

· También utilizamos esta estructura para hacer decisiones espontáneas (I.e. I'm tired. I'll go to bed).

· Cuando hacemos promesas (I.e. I promise I will go to the party).

· Cuando ofrecemos algo (I.e. I'll help you with your homework). Además, si se trata de una pregunta utilizamos 'shall' (I.e. Shall I help you with your homework?)

¿CÓMO SE FORMA?

Debemos tener en cuenta que 'will' es un modal, por lo que seguirá las normas básicas de los modales. Lo formamos utilizando 'will' seguido de un verbo en su forma base.

AFIRMATIVA: Para formar la afirmativa ponemos el modal 'will' seguido de un verbo en su forma base.

sujeto + will verbo + resto de frase.

Yo iré a la universidad.

I will go to the university.

Él irá a la universidad.

He'll go to the university.

*1 Debemos tener en cuenta que los modales no tienen una forma diferente para la tercera persona del singular.

*2 Recuerda que la forma contraída de 'will' es diferente ('ll). Además, la forma contraída sólo se puede utilizar con los pronombres personales.

NEGATIVA: Para formar la negativa tenemos que negar el modal 'will'. Además, es importante notar que la forma contraída negativa es 'won't'.

sujeto + won't + verbo + resto de frase.

Yo no iré a la universidad.

I won't go to the university.

Al igual que en afirmativa, podemos encontrar la forma completa (will not) o la forma contraída (won't)

INTERROGATIVA: Para formar la interrogativa tenemos que invertir el modal 'will' y el sujeto.

will + sujeto + verbo + resto de frase.

¿Irás tú a la universidad?

Will you go to the university?

RESPUESTAS CORTAS: Para dar respuestas cortas debemos utilizar la forma afirmativa o negativa del modal 'will'. Recuerda que las respuestas cortas son muy comunes porque cuando hablamos evitamos repetir lo que ya se ha dicho.

Will you go to the university?

Yes, I will / No, I won't

Debes tener en cuenta que utilizamos la forma completa en las respuestas cortas afirmativas, mientras que utilizamos la forma contraída en las respuestas cortas negativas.
